Wilfred Lehmann OAM returns to Warners Bay on Sunday November 9th to conduct a concert of great works. The Overture to Wagner’s Meistersingers is the grand opening with its majestic themes, bold brass and dignified paean to the art of music. Sir Malcolm Sargent arranged the slow movement of Borodin’s second string quartet for string orchestra and the LMPO had to seek internationally to hire the score. It finally arrived from Germany. The melodies are so familiar that it is easy to forget their origins. Those old enough will remember them from the musical Kismet.

Tchaikovsky’s ballet music is unparalleled in popularity and the orchestra will present excerpts from Act 1 and Act 3 of Sleeping Beauty. This is a big orchestral score including full woodwind and brass sections harp and piano. The selections are representative of the variety of moods in the ballet, dramatic, lyrical, ethereal, always with the magic of beautiful melody.

Dvorak’s seventh symphony was written for the London Philharmonic Society then published in Germany. It has four movements an allegro maestoso, a slow second movement, a scherzo and a fast finale. Although the New World symphony may be better known the seventh is arguably his finest. It , too has a large full orchestra with big brass and woodwind sections.

The concert starts at 2pm at Lake Macquarie Performing Arts Centre, Warners Bay. Tickets are available from Mercia Buck 49431672 or mbuck@exemail.com.au and at the door. Cost: $25, $20 concession, children $10 and families $60.
