Maestro Lehmann has had a long and distinguished career beginning in England as a violinist playing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Thomas Beecham. He went on to win the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition in London, and subsequently played in many concerts in Europe, Japan, Australia and the USSR. A conducting career began in Japan where he stayed for ten years conducting The Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony and The Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestras. He did many concerts for the ABC throughout Australia, and conducted the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. A number of years in The United States followed where he was Concertmaster of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. He formed The Nashville Chamber Orchestra, was conductor in residence at the Sewannee Summer Music Festival at Tennessee’s University of The South, and participated in the Marlboro Music Festival at the invitation of Rudolf Serkin.

Wilfred Lehmann is a distinguished and prize winning composer. His compositions include film music (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), ballet music for the Queensland Ballet Company, works for the Adelaide Violin Competition and the NSW Brass Band Championships. His Bacchanals was chosen to represent Australian compositions at the Paris Rostrum of 1988. He was awarded an OAM in 1994 for services to the performing arts as a violinist, composer and conductor.

The program for Lake Macquarie is Mozart’s Symphony No 40 in G minor, Mahler’s beautiful Adagietto for Harp & Strings from his fifth Symphony, The Petite Suite of Debussy, continuing the celebration of Debussy’s 150th birthday, and the delightfully sunny Bizet Symphony in C major.

We welcome distinguished harpist Miriam Lawson as the soloist in the Mahler.

LMPO will be led by another distinguished Australian Christopher Bearman OAM. Chris also was born in England and had a very impressive career as a solo violinist and orchestral player performing with all the principal BBC conductors including Pierre Boulez, Rudolfe KEMPE, John Pritchard and Charles Mackerras. Since the early nineties he has also been a conductor of note, and an educator.
